How To Get Koolaid Out of Your Hair In 10 Minutes

I just dyed my hair with koolaid and then got it out so easily! Usually it takes up to 2 weeks to fade out of my hair naturally. I'm going to share with you how I did this. First, if you've dyed your whole head of hair, you'll need to follow a different method. You should click here to read how to do that. Now, let's take a look at the awesome dye job I just did on myself:

It was so cool. If you want to find out how to do this, click here. I was sad to have to get rid of it, but I did it for the benefit of all of you out there who want to get koolaid out of your hair fast!

*Before you do this, just know that it will dry your hair out, so you'll need to make sure you know how to deep condition your hair with extra virgin olive oil or some other deep conditioning oil.

The first thing you need to do is boil some water in a pot (enough to dip the dyed portion of your hair in). Note: I have no idea if sticking your hair in boiling water is bad for it. Once the water is at a rolling boil, you should drop in a tablespoon of baking soda. It will fizz up so just keep that in mind. I didn't know it was going to do that and it scared the crap out of me.

Then you should take it off of the heat and place it on the counter by the sink. Dip your hair into the pot of  baking soda water. You'll hear some fizzy noise, the water will turn red (or whatever color you dyed your hair) and then it's gone. Just like that. I continued to dip my hair in the water for about a minute just to make sure I got it all out. **Leave your hair in the baking soda water for less than 30 seconds. This should be enough time to get it all out.

Pour the water into the sink, rinse the hair off and that's it. I still can't believe it was so fast and easy. Here is a picture of my hair after removing the koolaid today:

My hair looks kinda bad here because for some reason it got extremely tangled after doing the baking soda thing. I put some conditioner in it so that's why it looks kind of stringy. Instead of leaving it alone, I tried to fight with it so now I have a boat load of new split ends. I was already needing a trim...

Be careful with your hair after you do this. Also, try not to do this a lot of times. It may or may not be damaging to your hair.

*Edit* Maybe it would be a good idea to actually wash your hair after rinsing out the baking soda. I have been informed that some shampoos may chemically react with baking soda. I have used regular Suave when washing out the baking soda with no problem. I'm still alive. Someone mentioned that if you use Head N Shoulders or dandruff shampoo while baking soda is still in your hair, there could be a bad reaction.

If you haven't dyed your hair yet, do a strand test and test this out before doing all of your hair. I'm only sharing that my experience was extremely positive when I did this and I can't see why it wouldn't work for everyone. That said, just because it worked so well for me and didn't damage my hair DOES NOT mean it will be the same for you. You are doing this at your own risk and keep that in mind. There are definitely other ways of getting koolaid out of hair. You don't necessarily have to do it this way if you don't think it's a good idea.

So anyway, there you go. How to get koolaid out of your hair in 10 minutes. It works. Try it. Write your questions in the comments area.

    1. You're welcome! If you're really worried, do a strand test first before doing all of your hair, but it should come out with no problem. I didn't have any problems. It was out instantly.

    9. Hey! I dyed the ends my hair blue at the beginning of June for summer break. But tommorow I have school ID photos to take and I will be practically killed by my principal if I don't get this out today. *help* So does this work on light brown hair with blue highlights?

    10. Yea it should work even better for you because your hair isn't so light.

    1. Are you sure you did it right? I mean, there's no way that this doesn't work. Did you make sure there was enough baking soda? Put like 2 tablespoons in the water. And was the water bubbling hot? I just can't accept that this didn't work. Even if you just use warm water and baking soda, it still works. It takes longer, but it works.

If you did a dip dye, put your hair in a bun hiding the dipped portion with a scrunchie while around your parents and keep me updated. Seriously try again.

    1. I did red and purple on my hair, it was very dark, and it came out instantly. My hair is really light and was extremely damaged at the time. Like 4 inches at least of split ends, meaning it's harder to come out.. And it still came out instantly. Sorry. I'm trying to be helpful, but I don't think I can believe you.

If you're really serious, buy some dye remover at the store, but like I said, it's hard to believe you. You gotta be trolling me.

    2. Oh, another thing you can do is mix baking soda with clarifying shampoo and wash the dyed portion of your hair in warm water. Again, there's no way it won't come out unless you didn't use koolaid. Did you bleach your hair before or something?

      Delete
    3. Will it still work if my hair was bleached before I dyed it?

      Delete
    4. I guess. I've never bleached my hair, so I can't say for sure.

    3. It's just hard to believe because our hair isn't made differently, the koolaid we used isn't made differently, and the baking soda and water isn't different... so what's the difference? It should have worked.

      Delete
    4. Another thing you can try is to put baking soda on your dry hair and then pour vinegar over that part of the hair. Just don't get it in your eyes and condition your hair afterwards. People do this to clean their hair of build-up.

    1. Awesome. See, I knew that it worked because it worked for me too. It's like magic. And idk why your parents wouldn't approve of it. You are only staining your hair. Regular hair dye goes into the hair and changes the molecular structure so it damages hair. Koolaid only stains the outside of your hair. It's harmless.

      Delete
    2. What do u do if it left ur hair really dried?

      Delete
    3. Always use food grade oils to give moisture to your hair. Hair "moisturizing" products like conditioners, serums, and masks always have chemicals in them. Extra virgin olive oil (the kind you cook with) is one of the best things for bringing back moisture and vitamin E for the hair. Just put some on your hair at least a few hours before you wash it and you'll have better looking, smooth hair.

  7. I did this and most of it came out but there are still some parts that are kinda like a light pinkish. I was wondering if that will stay in there or will it eventually wash out?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It will eventually wash out, but you can try this again. It may be that your hair is thick and not all of it got wet.

      Delete
  8. Is there another way I can get the pinkish part out of my hair because the baking soda and the water really dried up my hair??

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yeah it did the same thing to my hair. What you can do is go ahead and do it, but wash your hair good afterwards and use a good conditioner. Maybe a leave-in conditioner or some type of oil like extra virgin olive oil on the ends. The girls at the Long Hair Community use that for deep moisturizing and they know what they're talking about. If your hair really needs the oil, it will soak it up after it's been on your hair for some hours.

Other than that, I haven't tried many of the other methods of getting koolaid out of hair just because this one worked so well, I don't think the other methods compare.

  9. Hey there! I've been wanting to try the kool aid dip dye method for a while now, but before I do, I have a couple of questions. My hair is naturally reall light blonde at the from and then it fades to a light brown towards the back of my head. What color would look the best? I wanted it to last from 2-4 weeks, so which method (cold or boiling water) could make that happen? Thanks for the tips to take it out above! I'm a klutz so now I have a back up if it goes wrong! PLEASE REPLY

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You can't predict how long it will last. You can make it last longer by not washing your hair as much. You can make it go away faster by trying what I wrote here. But there's no way to know for sure until you try. I would tell you to take a small section of hair and try the color you want to try and see what it looks like on you. Then, use the method above to try to get it out and see what happens. This is to make sure it will work for your hair.

Come back and post a comment when you're done.

  11. Hey hey hey!!! It's me, the girl who posted on the 25th! I tried out purple dip dye in my hair and the results are very nice:) its a red/purple/brown color that I'm sure will fade to a nicer color!!! First I boiled water then put it into two bowls. After I tied my hair in pigtails leaving the desired dipped length, I held it in the bowls after mixing in the kool aid for 8 minutes. After taking it out, I combed through it, scrunched it into a towel then blow dried it. I love the results and thank you so much for the tips. It turned out great!! Thanks - I'll be back in one week to post how it fades!:)

    1. Purple looks the exact same color in my hair. I've never tried a shorter time than 30 minutes. I'm going to try doing it in 10 minutes and see if I get the same results as I do with 30 minutes. It would be nice to speed up the process. Thanks for that tip. Oh, but you didn't rinse yours with water when you were finished. You let the koolaid dry in your hair? That may be the reason it worked in such a short time.

    3. Interesting that your mom doesn't like YOUR hair so she makes you change it, although you like it. I'm trying to see how this affects her at all and why she would feel the need to control your hair color to that extent.

    4. She's my mom. What boss says, I do. She likes how red looks so I'm going to try that instead.

  13. my daughter dipped her hair for ten minutes last night and I need to get the cherry kool aid out ASAP! her hair is light brown..will the baking soda bleach her hair?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It shouldn't. It didn't bleach mine. There's nothing in baking soda that lightens hair unless you add something to it. I just used regular baking soda from Walmart.

      Delete
    2. I thank you for your blog bc it helped alot. Most of the red is out after following your instructions 5 times with the baking soda. The ends are still pink (and dry) and I think we both learned a lesson from this.

      Delete
    3. I don't see why it didn't get it all out. Maybe you should try diluted vinegar and baking soda. About having dry ends, put some extra virgin olive oil on the ends (just a little) and it should soak into the hair and help a lot with that. Put the hair in a bun because you don't want grease stains everywhere.

      Delete
    4. Don't mix Head and Shoulder's and baking soda! It makes really strong hair bleach. The fumes can kill you!

      Delete
    5. Interesting, I hadn't heard that before. I never told anyone to mix the two. These are two separate suggestions to try at different times, but I'll make the wording a little more clear because I know people skim around articles and don't read very well.

  14. Hey guys, I dyed my hair light orange yesterday. It was supposed to turn red-orange. So I used this method to get the koolaid out and it came out with one try. I'm not sure why some people are having to do this multiple times.

  15. hey I've dip died my blonde hair with boiling water consecutively for a few months and this method isn't working... Should I keep at it or just wait for it to wash out?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Is your hair bleached or natural? If your hair is dyed blonde or bleached blonde, then I'm not sure if this will work for you. I would say wash with Head & Shoulders every day. Someone wrote that as a comment on one of my other posts, so maybe it will work for you. It's supposed to have something in it that strips dye from your hair.

      Delete
    2. I also tried washing with shampoo mixed with baking soda (didn't work.) I'm a natural blonde... I saw somewhere to try dish or laundry detergent, would you suggest that?

      Delete
    3. You can try dish soap I guess, just deep condition your hair a lot afterwards. I don't know about laundry detergent. I wouldn't do that.

      Delete
  16. I used a fruit punch dye and I absolutely hated it..I tried all sorts of vinegar and nothing would work. I took like 5 showers just today and that didn't help either. I look on the Internet and this blot popped up and I just got done and its all out of my hair! Thank you for your advice!!

    1. You're welcome. Tropical punch is one of my favorite hair dyes that I've done so far. Yeah, actually I was getting ready for something the other day and I forgot that I had dyed my hair and I was about to get in the shower. I saw that my hair was still pink and I used this method and it worked like it always does. I'm not sure if it's bad for your hair to dip it in boiling water, but it does the job.

  17. hey i dont have baking soda can i use baking powder instead?

    ReplyDelete

    1. I've read some stuff about the difference between baking soda and baking powder. Baking powder is supposedly just baking soda with some type of acid added to it. As far as cleaning goes (which is basically what you are doing to your hair when you do this), it should work the same in theory. I haven't tried it, so I can't say what it does. If you decide to, let me know if it worked the same way.

    1. Sometimes my hair keeps a slight pink tint that isn't very noticeable. It does always go away after a couple of washes though so I don't worry about it.

  20. I just tried this and it only came out a bit!do you think if I mixed baking soda with some conditioner and put it in the died part for a bit, that it would help when I get in the shower to rinse it out???

    ReplyDelete

    1. You can keep trying to fade it with shampoo. I don't think fading it with conditioner is going to do much. Conditioner doesn't strip the hair of anything, it only coats the hair.

  21. i have dark brown hair will my hair become lighter if i do this baking soda thing?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I haven't heard of baking soda lightening hair. I know that it gets rid of build-up that could have been there for a long time, so the hair may appear to be lighter, but it's really just cleaner? Hair tends to look darker when it has build-up.

      Delete
  22. thank you very much this worked really well.

  23. Back in october I dyed the ends of my hair red with the kool aid. I then had two job interviews I had to do and found out after I dyed my hair. No problem I thought. I'll just dye my hair darker with store hair dye. The red turned to a deep burgundy with the brown. It looked pretty and was tolerable by both of my employers. Today I tried to go blonde and all it did was lighten the red so it almost looks as if i didn't do anything to it. My question is would this work even I've dyed my hair? I'm so ready for this red to be gone =[ lol.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. So you are trying to only take the red out or take both the red and brown out? You can try it. Since you dyed your hair with store hair dye, you may want to try head & shoulders shampoo also to try to get it out. It may work, but I can't say for sure. Since the red has been there for 3 months, I'm not sure why it hasn't faded yet except that something may have happened when you dyed your hair with the brown that kept the red in as well.

You can try washing with baking soda and vinegar also.

      Delete
    2. Yes I just want the red out. I know my hair was pretty badly fried and dead with the ends I dyed but I finally got my hair cut and cut a lot off yesterday. That may explain why it's still keeping color. I'll try the baking soda dip and let you know the results. I'm ok If it strips the blonde I just did. My fiance doesn't like it and wants my brown hair back lol.

      Delete
    3. That may have something to do with it, but I've dyed my hair with koolaid and it had a lot of damage on the ends and it still came out. Try it and see if it works. It shouldn't get rid of the blonde. Baking soda only takes off surface dyes. When you lighten your hair, you are actually changing the inside structure of the hair so it's kind of a permanent change until you dye it again or cut if off.

      Delete
  24. It worked like a charm!!!! Thank you so so much. It is finally gone!!! And it didn't strip the blonde or anything. It made no difference that my hair was colored in case people ask in the future =]

But recently when I redid my tips... I sneezed when my hair was being dipped and ended up with an awkward stripe effect on the right side--- Going to try this out tomorrow thanks a ton

    1. Lol. I've never sneezed while I was doing it, but I usually dip once a little more than what I'm going to dye just to give it a natural look instead of a blunt line. When it's done, it looks like it gradually fades into the darker color.

    2. Also do you just put vinegar and baking soda in your hair or how do you do that?

      Delete
    3. Don't wet your hair. Put baking soda in your dry hair on the koolaid part. Then lean over a sink or the shower and pour vinegar over that part. Just try not to get any of this in your eyes. It will work better if you only dyed the ends of your hair. It will create a reaction and fizz up. Let it continue to fizz and pour more vinegar. Once it stops, rinse it out and condition because your hair will probably dry out from this.

  28. Will the baking soda bleech your hair?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Baking soda doesn't bleach hair. It removes build-up. For someone who has a lot of build-up (they use hair spray and synthetic materials on their hair) they may see that the color of their hair lightens a little after using baking soda. Their hair didn't actually lighten though. That's IS the natural color of their hair without all that built up crap on it.

  33. I dip died my hair purple during summer in 2012, it faded to a redish color over time. I then died my whole head to a lighter blonde than I already had in October. The red color became lighter but its still in my hair. The light blonde dye was a temporary dye and said it would come out in 27 washes. It is February now and my roots look terrible and I don't think they are supposed to look this way. Plus the red is still in. Do you think this will help if I put it all over my head?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. When you koolaid your hair, you stain the surface. When you lighten your hair, you change the chemical structure of the inside of the hair. Baking soda can get koolaid out but it can't do anything along the lines of getting blonde out.

    1. Yeah, my hair is pretty much the same color. It looks lighter in the photos, but it's more like a medium blonde with red. Unless you have bleached hair, purple will look auburn brown in your hair. I have a picture of my hair after dip dying it purple. It's on this blog. The post is called Purple Koolaid Dip Dye I think. It looks auburn in my hair. The reason is because the yellow in your hair will mix with purple and turn it brown.

  38. Thanks so much! i was at a friend's house and i dyed my hair with KoolAid, thinking my mom would like it. But, of course, she hated it and said that if it didnt wash out soon she would cut all of the red off! After a week, it still wasnt out so i looked up ways to wash it out, and this came up. It didnt fully work, so i washed my hair and that did it!

    1. You're welcome. I don't understand these people complaining that it doesn't work. It's not like their hair is any different than yours or mine. The baking soda gets out most of it and usually there is some pink tint left. After a couple of washes, that comes out and it's like I never dyed it.

      Delete
  39. so you soak it in the baking soda water for 10 min?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Please don't do it for 10 minutes. It's probably not good for your hair. Do the least amount of time you can do until the color is gone and just wash out any remaining color. Mine usually has a slight pink stain left on the hair that 2 washes gets out easily.

Even dipping for 1 minute might be a stretch. The color almost instantly comes out, so no need to do this for more than a few seconds.

      Delete
    2. Oh, I see why you said 10 minutes. Because of the title of the blog post. No, I was actually counting the time it takes to get the water hot enough to actually do it.

I boiled water and let the red soak for minutes. I've used clarifying shampoos and everything. What should I do? And it's not just your average tips. 43. My hair is really really thin and it falls out easily. Should I even dye my hair? Please help

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. First of all, you can change that. I used to have thinner hair and my hair has thickened up since I started using unrefined virgin coconut oil on it, especially the scalp. It keeps your hair from falling out as much. That, and avoid using heat or chemicals on your hair and you will probably see an improvement.

About the koolaid: If you have to bleach your hair first, I'd say no unless you want even thinner hair with more breakage. There's always hair chalk and even some people have gotten things like Manic Panic to show up on darker hair (assuming your hair is dark, that is).

If you don't have to lighten your hair and you'd only be putting koolaid on it, there shouldn't be a problem. The most it ever did was make my hair a little dry which can be fixed with extra virgin olive oil. If you have a concern, just dye a small strand and see if your hair got dried out from it or not. You could also use the conditioner method instead of the dip dye method and this should combat any drying effect that the koolaid might have.

And for real, take into consideration the unrefined virgin coconut oil. It has really made my braid about 1/3 thicker!

  44. Hi, I am considering kool aiding my hair. However my mom is concerned it won't look good because my hair is fine and dirty blonde. I was going to put in a bluish/turquoise color. I don't know much about kool aiding hair, so plz excuse my cluelessness. But I was wondering if it were to damage my hair, if it would look good, and how strong the color would b. Plz answer! thx

    1. Just get her to let you do a strand test. Blue always turns out a teal color in my hair because of the golden tones. It really depends on what color your hair is. It doesn't damage hair. You can look at my post on how I dyed my hair blue to find out what it looked like for me.

I am a Mom who not only allowed the koolaid dye, but did it for my 16 year old - She has been sick of it for 2 weeks and nothing we tried (Traditional hair dye remover "Oops", dish detergent etc) worked. 1. They aren't fried. You have to wash your hair a few times to get the baking soda out. Until it's all out, your hair will feel like straw.

    2. And of course baking soda will dry your hair so you have to condition it with extra virgin olive oil afterwards too.

    1. Dye it like normal and do this on the day you want it out. It will fade a little during the week as you wash it. If you want to make sure you don't make your mom mad, do a strand test first and make sure you can get it out. I don't know why but some people have a harder time getting it out. Maybe they use boiling water when they dye it. I'm not sure, because it always comes out for me.

    1. Sometimes mine fades out just by washing it. It can take a month though. If you used Watermelon Cherry, it might not fade well. I had a hard time getting that out of my hair for some reason, but it's the only color that wouldn't fade for me with regular washing. Just wash your hair each day but don't expect it to come out quickly.

    1. You're welcome, but why did you do it for 20 minutes??? That's a long time to keep your hair in boiling water. In the post, I explain to leave your hair in it for no more than 1 minute. The reason it's called "How to get koolaid out of your hair in 10 minutes" is because I factored in the time it takes for water to go from room temp to boiling. So from the time you start heating the water up to the time you get the koolaid out, it takes about 10 minutes. I hoped that people would read the post and know that. I don't want anyone melting their hair off like that one girl on Youtube.....

  59. I just dyed my blonde hair with purple kool aid on the tips and I was wondering if I keep it in for longer, will it come out easier? Or harder? I need it out for my year end dance at my school in June and I will try this method!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The color will be the strongest when you first dye it. So after washing it one time, my hair fades quite a bit. The more it fades on its own, the easier it is to get it out when you want to. So to answer your question, it should be easier to get out if you leave it in longer and let it fade some.

  60. I really want to do a pink and purple but like from the ends its purple/maroon and it fades into pink as it goes up.. Anyway, my mom says she doesnt think she will let me do it because she already bought blue hair chalk to do like a single highlight.. But the chalk wont work for dip dyng plus it washes out fast.. Any suggestions on how i can convince her? Also im 15 and its my hair.. But she still says no :/

Another question is i have dark dirty blonde or light brown hair. Do you think pink and maroon would work? Or would it turn out bad?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. She probably wants you to do the chalk because it's less permanent. I'm just guessing. But koolaid doesn't have to be permanent either. Dye a really small part, like 1/2 an inch at the bottom and then try to get it out. If you can get it out, you have a good chance of being able to get it all out later. I haven't had problems getting koolaid out of my hair, but for some reason some people have. Maybe if you can show her that it comes out easily, she will let you do it. If that's not the reason she's not letting you do it, Idk why else. Maybe she just likes the color blue. Regardless red, pink, or purple would look better in your hair. I'm not sure how blue would look exactly on your hair color.

      Delete
    2. Oh, I forgot you were talking about blue chalk. Of course it would show up in your hair just fine because it's chalk. But blue koolaid is another story. I think it would end up turning dark blue but that's just a guess.

      Delete
    3. If you do get your mom to let you do the koolaid to your hair, do not put your hair in the koolaid while its hot. it will stay in for MONTHS. thats whats happending to me . its been a month and the baking soda thing took away 3/4 of it! You should show your mom statments of people who hafe done it to their hair and the effects. As a matter of fact, you could show her this website.

      Delete
    4. I definitely try to tell people not to use boiling water when dying their hair with koolaid because it's the dumbest idea ever. You'll get your hair colored with warm water. There is no reason to take it to an extreme. A lot of people do use boiling water though and then not even this can help them much after that.

  65. Hi! I'm planning to dye my hair with kool aid and I asked my older sister how long does it stay in and she said some people at her school dyed their hair at the beginning of the year and it stayed in till the end of the year. Is that possible? Or would have to re-dye it at some point? Oh and if I dyed my hair and didn't use this method would it still come out? Just a thought :P

    ReplyDelete
  66. All I can do is tell you what it does to my hair. I can't know for sure what it will do in your hair. For some reason, it's different for everyone. I'd say a lot of people have had success getting it out of their hair with this method.

For me, it fades a lot after 1 wash. And from there, it slowly fades over the course of 1-2 weeks and sometimes takes up to a month to come out. But I wash my hair everyday. For people who don't wash their hair everyday, it will take even longer. It will be different for everyone. The only way to know is to dye a small piece and test it out.

I think it is possible for it to stay a long time. I don't know if it can stay up to a year. You will likely have to re-dye because it does fade a lot and it will end up being a very light version of what it once was when you first dyed it.
